Its indeed DIWALI time for all filmy aficionados with two big releases DON and JAAN-E-MANN hitting the screens this week
I was short on my pocket money and hence had to make a pick between one of the two movies.A difficult decision indeed. After much thought and deliberation I decided to pick JAAN-E-MANN.So was my decision fruitful ??? Or am I repentant????Read on to know…….

The music has already proved to be SUPER HIT and that’s half the battle won considering JAAN-E-MANN is a love story. But there are still many hurdles a movie must cross to see smiles on the faces of the distributers and producers.JAAN-E-MANN talks about the story of Suhaan(Salman) and Piya(Preity) who fall in love during college and eventually tie the knot .But due to certain problems they eventually break up.When Piya sends a letter to Suhaan demanding 50 lakhs as alimony then Suhaan turns to his lawyer uncle Bonny(Anupam Kher) to save him from the herculean problem that has just surrounded him.In comes Agastya(Akshay Kumar) who used to once love Piya but was left broken hearted as she chose Suhaan .Salman and Bonny then try to see that Piya falls for Agastya and marries him so that Suhaan is relieved of his problem of coughing up 50 lakhs. Now the problem lies that Agastya is not quite a ladies man and Salman needs to teach him all the tricks in the book to woo Piya. Will Piya fall in love with Agastya?????Will the nerdy Agastya manage to impress Piya????What about Suhaan, are his feelings for Piya completely dead?????So whose JAAN-E-MANN will Piya end up being????For all these answers you will have to cough up some money and pay a visit to your nearest theatre.

JAAN-E-MANN is reminiscent of the yester year’s Amol Palekar’s Choti Si Baat in some ways. But what impresses you is not the story( which isnt anything new) but the way things are executed and presented .The ostentatiously displayed sets and the ritzy cinematography give the film an opulent feel.Production values are great and will put the Chopra’s and Johar’s to shame .The way the songs are interspersed into the story is a first timer for Indian Cinema.Choreography by Farah Khan is definitely worth special mention. The lyrics by Gulzar and music by Anu Malik leave you enchanted .On the technical front the film is one of the best ever witnessed by INDIAN audiences The film marks the metamorphosis of Shirish Kunder from an editor to a director and he makes this transgression comfortably.Scenes are executed wonderfully and the use of lights to convey emotions is simply fantabulous.

On the flip side is the huge length of the film (more than 3 hours) .Some amount of trimming in the first half will definitely do the film a world of good. Also the way of narration of the plot may not find appreciation by the masses .The comedy also seems puerile at times .The first twenty minutes or so move tardily but after Akshay’s entry the film gathers momentum.

On the acting front Anupam Kher as a midget is cute and will be a hit with kids.Preity Zinta looks beautiful in each and every frame and delivers a convincing performance. Akshay Kumar sheds the casanova image that he was used to playing in his recent films and plays the role of a geek with panache. His unique laughter and mannerisms will surely tickle you.But Salman who is presented with a gem of a role takes the cake.He delivers one of his best performance of late. The way he carry’s off his character is wonderful to see. Also a first timer will be seeing Salman enact a lady’s role in one of the scenes. So for all Salman fans the film is a must watch.

For me Jaan-E- Mann was a joy ride. Critics may refer to itas old wine in new bottle but mind you the bottle’s damn new and it is indeed better than the wine it conceals. So Jaan-E-Mann is a must watch . Do not go to find logic in each and every scene. Leave your thinking hats at home and enter the theatre with only one aim—- TO ENJOY .You shall definitely not regret.

Rating— 7/10

Hmm… love reading ur reviews… but really dont love the films as much as your reviews.. hehe.

DON and your so very loved 7/10 JAAN-E-MANN have been major upsets this season. The new bottle u r praising so much more than the wine probably hasnt impressed the masses. I for particular havnt seen this flick u have reviewed, but have heard a lot of negative critism on the WWW.

For all movie recommendations i chk out my fren Deep’s Blog. I guess you would like to know what he has to say about your (a must watch) Jaan-E-Mann: http://www.whoisdeep.com/2006/10/20/jaan-e-mann-movie-review/

Your review as always was cool… But I still believe you would suit more as a Marketting Officer for a film production company rather than a film critic. Lol! 😉
