Anything For You Ma’am —–An IITian’s Love Story

January 17, 2007 at 2:35 pm 53 comments

Anything for You Ma’am comes from the stable of Tushar Raheja ,a prodigy indeed.Consider studying in fourth year of Engineering and completing a book in six months flat.A feat indeed isn’t it.And if I forgot to mention Tushar is studying at the temple of Indian education IIT. Oh….God does show his benovelence towards some of those selected few.Tushar, I guess is one of them.
An IITian author.Huh ya,there was one more of this species(IIT) who had taken to writing and had churned out a best seller.Ya right,Chetan Bhagat it was.So are there any similarities between Tushar’s and Chetan’s novels. If I say the books are as different as chalk and cheese , I shall be wrong.Of course there are similarities .And why not. Both are from IIT Delhi, both belong to the same generation and both are romantic(I do not know these blokes personally ,but that’s what their novels reveal). But both of them do have their distinctive style of writing .While Chetan in his book “Five Point Someone” gave insights into the education system ,the hostel life, etc. at IIT Delhi.Tushar’s book is more of a love story with IIT Delhi in its back ground.

Tushar Raheja

SynopsisTejas is a fun loving “guy next door” type bloke. He is a voracious reader, writes poetry, plays the guitar and flirts with his sister’s friends. And yes he is studying at IIT Delhi.Tejas is also truly romantic and has fallen in love with his sister’s friend ,Shreya. After much wooing the one sided affair turns into a two sided one.But there is one problem though ,Shreya stays in Madras while Tejas is at Delhi. Also Shreya’s father has got to know of his daughter’s affair and will not allow her to go to Delhi. After all like all over- protective father’s he must save his daughter from the love bug. 🙂

So Tejas has to get all geared up and travel miles to reach his loved one.But the journey will not be easy.He has to skip his Industrial Tour, lie to his parents and proffesors, and also has to face the wrath of Prof. P Sidhu who smells something fishy and is determined to decimate Tejas plans. And then there is cruel Mr. Fate who is playing games with Tejas .Just when Tejas feels he has overcome one odd , Mr. fate pops out another. And Tejas like a brave soldier battles against all the twists and turns that fate brings for him. Will Tejas succeed in meeting his Ma’am(Shreya)??Do join Tejas on this humorous journey filled with surprises and romance.

Final Verdict—– If you read a book from start to finish without once  getting up ,then the book must be captivating and fabulous.Anything For You Ma’am passes this litmus test.Tushar Raheja uses a splendid blend of humor and wit to make the novel a splendid read and you forget to realize when five hours have passed away and you have finished turning 250 odd pages.
The story is a simple tale and if you are an avid reader(of novels) you can easily predict what will turn up next. But Tushar’s ability to hold your attention with his narrative skills and his free flowing style is what keeps you glued to the book.
Tushar does go over the top in a few chapters and deviates from his otherwise realistic presentation. For example some dialogues do not have that informal feel that you would associate with two friends or brothers chatting. In an attempt to make every line humorous sometimes Tushar over does it.But in most of the parts you do relate to Tejas’s character and man it does make you wanna love someone.
Priced at Rs. 100,the book is definitely worth a buy. You shall enjoy what you read.Go grab a copy.It is worth it.

Remember comparing Tushar with his idols R.K. Narayan and P.G. Woodhouse will be whole injustice. He ranks nowhere close to them. Infact he is several ranks lower. He is just an amateur simplistic writer. But if he continues to churn such novels then maybe Someday……..

Rating— 7/10

Here are two strikingly different reviews…….Rashmi Bansal and The Hindu. they are two contasting reviews indeed and my review falls somewhere in between. It is for you readers whom to trust now 🙂

Read this book.. your review says it all.. Its not the best, but just a worthful attempt by an IITian at novel-writing. Sense of humour as u said is appreciative… 😀

    thats a good review..

rashmi bansal review was a shocker indeed..
But anyways. 7/10 is a well deserved rating..

  • 7. Madhyam  |  April 13, 2007 at 7:16 pm

What an unutterably crappy amateurish piece. I finished it in 30 min flat–not speed reading but gave it up after. I completely, totally agree with Rashmi: the book is best used to clean dark orifices, one page at a time. Quite sure that would give us more pleasure than reading it. And for the people who like it: well, it takes all kinds…

    The book sucks.. BIGTIME. Period.
The only positive that one can derive from the book is that anyone with basic understanding of grammar can write.
I will be writing a book too. wait for it. 😛

Okay, I don’t know about the book, which nevertheless seems totally pop-culture, but I know this: All the people who’ve commented on this post, and the blogger, are in serious need of some English grammar+sentence completion tuition. I mean, seriously, how did you guys even read the book completely? Get some lessons, quick!
